Camp Rio Project Story
In early 2021, the children's ministry at Oak Hills Church approached our creative team with a new idea for a summer camp style program to replace the generic VBS (vacation bible school) program they were using. My creative director and promotions coordinator met with the program director to figure out what she was thinking and the theme of this new idea.
It was to be called Camp Rio and the theme would be a Fiesta style one. I jumped at that because I'd been wanting to bring in the Fiesta style to OHC for years and had unsuccessfully attempted years prior as well. Finally, an opportunity to make something fun and bright! San Antonio is a lot like my hometown of New Orleans, LA, so the Mardi Gras to Fiesta tie-in is pretty similar and both cities love their events. The program director provided us a photo of the Spurs Fiesta jerseys for colors and I built off of that idea.

For the logo design, I started sketching out ideas that needed to be child-like but not too young because it spanned across age groups and even adults. I knew Rio means River, so further research went into river, water meets Fiesta. Fiesta means party, so I went with party imagery and then obvious Fiesta tie-ins. I went in my usual direction of turning over every stone for ideas and as I bounced the drafts around with my team and Creative Director we settled on 2-3 that we felt could be the winner and still look like it was part of the OHC / Children's ministry DNA.
Characters / Illustrations: I went straight up Fiesta and thought after making the final vectors "...I wonder what these would look like as a pattern?" so once I started I landed on an initial concept that I would use to build out the promo and other branding materials.
Results: Camp Rio has been a HUGE success and this year (2022) we had to place a re-order for shirts because we had more participants and volunteers than we anticipated. The overall branding has evolved as I've tweaked it from 2021 to 2022, so maybe another iteration will come down the line but for now, the client LOVES everything and it's both an effective and exciting program for the families at Oak Hills Church. My team really helped me refine and build out even more deliverables that aren't pictured here. They built out signage (tents, flags, A-frames), videos, custom name-tags and web materials. It takes a team!
Hope you enjoy the project!
